Can trigger points cause headaches?

Introduction

 

Trigger points causing headaches show themselves as tight knots to of muscle fibers that can form in various  areas of the body, including the neck region. When these trigger points become activated or aggravated, they can refer pain to other areas, such as the head, back of eyes and surrounding areas

The pain caused by trigger points in the head and neck region can be intense and debilitating. It may feel like a dull ache, a throbbing sensation, or a sharp pain. Trigger point headaches often occur on one side of the head and can be accompanied by other symptoms like neck stiffness or limited range of motion.

Treatment Options For Trigger Points As A Cause of Headaches.

To alleviate trigger points as a cause of  headaches, various treatment options are available. These include manual therapy techniques such as trigger point release, massage, and stretching exercises. By far the quickest way to alleviate headaches though  is to needle the muscle groups both in the shoulder and side of neck.  Muscles including sternomastoid and trapezius.

If you squeeze your trapezius (muscle at the top of your shoulder), you may well illicit a sensation or pain that radiates into the neck and back of head.  This is you activating the trigger point.These  can indeed cause headaches, particularly in the head and neck region. These tight knots of muscle fibers can become activated or aggravated, leading to pain that radiates to other areas, including the head, back of eyes, and surrounding regions. The pain experienced from trigger point headaches can range from a dull ache to a throbbing sensation or even sharp pain.
